First non-jewellery related post. I learned about this a number of months ago when we had a family dinner at our house and the conversation turned to more random topics. Apparently, one radio show had someone on the phone saying that they had tried something they had heard about from friends when they had locked themselves out of their car. Their car had central locking and they had locked their keys inside (not sure how one could lock their keys in a car with central locking but I suppose some people have automatic locking, or possibly their electric 'unlocker' separate from their key fob), and rang their family at home to fetch the spare electric key. Then they held the mobile phone to the car while the person at home held the key to the phone receiver and pressed it. Hey presto, the car clicked and they could open the door. It works with landlines but the person locked out is obviously going to have a mobile. We tested this out, ensuring that the spare key wasn't anywhere that the signal could reach the car except through the phone wire, and it really does work. It also succeeds in freaking me out a bit.
